FAQs

How is yoga therapy different from traditional therapy?

A therapist is trained to diagnose and treat mental and emotional health issues through talk therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or other evidence- based approaches to support their client. Yoga Therapists do not diagnose- they work with the diagnoses or complaint from the client (or their treatment team), and support them in creating a supportive routine to ease suffering caused by the diagnosis/complaint.

How is yoga therapy different from physical or occupational therapy?

Occupational and Physical therapists support clients on a physical level, yoga therapists support clients physical body, energetic body, mind, and spirit/spirituality following the beliefs and comfort level of the client!

What if a person has never done yoga before?

I personally believe that is the best place to start- Though yoga and yoga therapy have similarities they are not the same thing. A background in yoga is not required or necessary to work with a yoga therapist. Working with a yoga therapist 1:1 can support you in feeling empowered and prepared if you are ever interested in joining group yoga classes as well.

How do you develop a routine for your clients to do independently?

We have a conversation about their lifestyle and ability to self-motivate so we can create a routine that fits into their life. Depending on how the client feels about moving through their routine independently we may meet more often in the beginning as the habit is being built, or they may be offered resources like videos, voice recordings, or encouraged to text me for accountability. The goal is to create a routine that doesn’t feel overwhelming or unattainable so the routine may be combined with an activity the client already has in their schedule.

How long is a typical routine for your clients to do independently?

Dependent on the client: Typically ranges from 5-60 minutes

Some clients will be asked to do something multiple times a day and other clients will be asked to commit to something once a week.

How often will you meet with clients?

Dependent on the client and the support they need. Typically weekly to start, however some need more support in the beginning and we might meet 3-5 times a week others I may meet with once a month.
